The M&S Body Sensor Body Temperature Control Mattress Topper is a polyester fibre-filled topper sold online by Marks & Spencer in four UK sizes, from £69 for a single. M&S says its Body Sensor technology regulates your temperature through the night, keeping you warm when it is cool and cool when it is warm, for less interrupted sleep.

What the temperature claim is worth

The problem the topper targets is real. A 2012 review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno) found that, with bedding and clothing in use, heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep, and the NHS guide to insomnia names a room that is too hot or cold among the most common causes of insomnia. What M&S does not say is how Body Sensor works or how much it changes the temperature at the sleeping surface: the product page publishes no measurements, no test and no named material technology. We therefore score it on what can be checked, a soft polyester topper, and treat the temperature benefit as a manufacturer claim.

Feel and care

As a fibre-filled topper it feels soft, which we estimate at 3 out of 10. It adds a cushioned surface to a mattress that feels too firm but does little for pressure relief or support, which is the job of foam or latex. It is easy to live with: the whole topper goes in the washing machine at 40°C and can be tumble dried on low. If you have a dust mite allergy, note that NHS advice on allergic rhinitis is to wash bedding at 60°C or above, so this topper is best used under a protector you can wash hotter.

Buyers rate it well. On the M&S page, 115 reviews average 4.5 out of 5, with 73 five-star and 5 one- or two-star ratings.

In our assessment a fibre topper like this one is the light, washable option: cheaper than foam or latex and easy to handle, but it gives less pressure relief at the shoulder and hip and flattens with use sooner. It suits a mattress that feels slightly too firm, not one that has worn out.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Pick the Body Sensor topper if you want a soft, washable layer from a high-street name and like the idea of temperature regulation at a fibre-topper price. Skip it if you need pressure relief or evidence, because M&S publishes no measurements for the technology and the polyester fill adds cushioning rather than support.”
