The Aspire Cashmere 1000 Pocket Pillowtop is a 30cm pocket sprung mattress handmade in the UK, with up to 1,000 nested springs, a hand-tufted pillow top and a 250gsm cashmere and wool blend layer. A 4ft6 double costs £640 on Aspire Store, which makes it the deepest and most cushioned of Aspire’s 1,000-spring mattresses.

Construction

Aspire’s layer diagram lists nine layers, from the sleep surface down.

Layer What it does
Woven damask tufted sleep surface Breathable top fabric
Cashmere blend layer (250gsm) Cashmere and wool comfort filling
Recycled poly fibre (400gsm) Soft padding in the pillow top
Recycled poly fibre (800gsm) Main comfort layer over the springs
Recycled felt insulator Stops the springs being felt through the fillings
Pocket spring unit, up to 1,000 springs Main support, with a framed edge
Recycled felt insulator Pad under the springs
Recycled poly fibre (800gsm) Padding on the underside
Woven damask base fabric Breathable underside

Aspire’s diagram says “up to 1,000” springs per mattress, so the smaller sizes carry fewer. That is inside the 600-800 to 2,500 range that the National Bed Federation gives as typical for pocket sprung mattresses. Aspire calls the feel medium and warns that the natural fillings make it feel considerably firmer for the first two weeks, before it settles. Air vents on all four sides let warm air out of the deep build.

Returns and guarantee

There is no sleep trial. Aspire’s returns policy lets you cancel within 14 days of delivery, but not once a mattress’s hygiene seal has been broken, so the decision is final when the plastic comes off. The 5-year guarantee is free in the first year only; after that Aspire charges 20% of the current retail price towards a replacement in year two, rising each year after.

Who it suits

The deep pillow top suits side sleepers and couples who like a soft, cushioned surface over traditional springs. If you prefer a flatter, firmer top for less money, the Aspire Cashmere 1000 Pocket Tufted uses the same spring count under a tufted cover. The rest of the range, from rolled hybrids to hand-tufted 3000 models, is compared in our Aspire mattress comparison.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Pick the Cashmere 1000 Pocket Pillowtop if you want a deep, cushioned traditional mattress with natural fibres in the top without paying for Aspire's 3000-spring models. Back sleepers who like a flatter, firmer surface will be better served, for less money, by the Aspire Cashmere 1000 Pocket Tufted.”
