Hintergrund
Über Futons from Japan
Futons from Japan is a UK-facing shop for traditional Japanese bedding: the shikibuton (floor mattress), the kakebuton (quilt) and the zabuton (floor cushion). According to its about page, every piece is hand-made in a family-run workshop in Kochi, Japan, by a family that has worked in cotton for more than 100 years.
The shikibuton
The shikibuton is sold in four sizes from 90 x 200cm to 180 x 200cm with a choice of two fillings: unbleached natural cotton from Mexico mixed with 10% man-made fibre for breathability, or a denser, firmer filling of cotton certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard. There is no foam and no spring unit. A shikibuton is designed to lie on the floor or on tatami and to be folded away, aired and sunned regularly.

Ordering from Japan
The sales and shipping policy includes freight, a vacuum storage bag and airing clips in the price. It also warns that UK buyers may occasionally be charged import fees, and that a futon can only be exchanged if it arrives damaged or defective. That is the main trade-off against a UK-made futon: you get an authentic, hand-made Japanese floor futon, but no change-of-mind return.
