“Most Dreams shoppers should start with the Hyde & Sleep memory foam topper and switch only for a clear reason, such as heat, washing or a wish for wool. An opened topper cannot go back, so settle on the filling before you order.”
Foam, fibre or wool
The filling decides more than the label. Three of the four toppers come from ranges sold only by Dreams (Hyde & Sleep, Dream Team and TheraPur), and Flaxby is made for Dreams by the Yorkshire bedmaker Harrison Spinks. Memory foam moulds to the body where it presses hardest, which suits side sleepers on a firm mattress. Gel foam does a similar job with less heat build-up, and heat matters: a 2012 review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno) concluded that heat exposure increases wakefulness and reduces slow-wave and REM sleep. Fibre softens a bed for the least money, and wool adds a breathable, springy layer at a far higher price.

Prices in every UK size
Dreams prices each topper by size, and not every topper comes in every size. Only the Dream Team fits a small double, and it is also the one that stops at king.
None of the four comes in an Emperor size.
Washing and dust mites
Care is where the Dreams toppers differ most. The Dream Team’s whole top layer unzips for a 40°C wash, the two foam toppers have removable covers rated for 30°C, and for the Flaxby enhancer Dreams gives a turning schedule but no washing instructions. The NHS advice on allergic rhinitis is to use synthetic bedding and wash it regularly at 60°C and above when house dust mites are the trigger, and none of these toppers is rated for that. If you have a dust mite allergy, put a mattress protector that washes at 60°C over whichever topper you buy.
You cannot sleep-test a Dreams topper
Dreams’ 100-night comfort guarantee applies to its mattresses. For bedding, toppers included, Dreams’ returns page allows 14 days from delivery for items that are unused and unopened in their original packaging. That is in line with the law, since GOV.UK’s guidance on returns lets retailers refuse “sealed items that for health or hygiene reasons cannot be returned once they have been opened”. Once the bag is open, the topper is yours, which is why we rank on construction and care rather than on any trial.
When a topper is the wrong buy
A 4cm or 5cm topper changes the surface of a bed, not the support underneath it. Bed Advice UK, the consumer site of the National Bed Federation, says most mattresses begin to lose their shape and support after around 7 to 8 years. A topper laid over a dip simply follows it, so if your mattress is that old or visibly sagging, a new mattress is the better spend.
Also in the Dreams topper aisle
Dreams lists two more items with its toppers that we did not rank. The Silentnight Hotel Collection Supreme is a polyester fibre topper with a box-stitched edge that Dreams sells online in king size only, at £65; our Silentnight mattress toppers comparison covers Silentnight toppers in every size. The Dreams Dual Comfort Heated Blanket is an electric blanket, so it warms the bed but adds no cushioning.
