The Hyde & Sleep Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a 4cm layer of memory foam made in the UK for Dreams, which owns the Hyde & Sleep label and sells the topper only in its stores and at dreams.co.uk. It does one job: it softens a mattress that feels too hard at the shoulder and hip, for a fraction of the cost of a new mattress.

Feel and who it suits

Memory foam softens under body heat and weight, so this topper moulds around the heavier parts of the body and spreads their pressure. That suits side sleepers first, and back sleepers whose mattress feels hard. Dreams gives no firmness grade; from the construction we place it at about 4 out of 10, a medium-soft surface with a slow sink. Stomach sleepers may find that their hips sink further than they like.

The NHS guide to insomnia lists an uncomfortable bed among the common causes of poor sleep, and a topper is the cheapest fix when the mattress underneath is still sound. If yours sags or has lost its support, a 4cm layer will follow the dip rather than correct it.

The weak point is heat. Memory foam holds more warmth than fibre or wool, and the profiled surface only partly offsets that. If you wake up warm, the TheraPur ActiGel Cool topper from the same retailer is the better choice.
