The Protect-A-Bed Premium Mattress Protector is a fitted, waterproof cover with a cotton terry towelling surface bonded to the brand’s Miracle Membrane, a thin polyurethane layer that blocks liquid but lets body heat and water vapour through. It fits mattresses up to 35cm deep, and Protect-A-Bed’s UK shop sells it in 12 sizes from small single to super king, with a replacement warranty of up to 10 years.

Premium Mattress Protector prices by UK size

Size Dimensions Regular price
Small single 75 x 190cm £49.95
Single 90 x 190cm £49.95
Small double 120 x 190cm £69.95
Double 135 x 190cm £69.95
King 150 x 200cm £74.95
Super king 180 x 200cm £84.95

These are the list prices. When we checked in September 2026 every size was reduced by 50%, and archived copies of the same page from April and July 2025 show the single at £29.97 against its £49.95 list price, so a discount is the norm rather than the exception. The shop also sells a large single (110 x 190cm) and the European 90 x 200, 120 x 200, 140 x 200 and 160 x 200cm sizes.

What the terry top does

Terry towelling absorbs spills and sweat into the fabric, and the membrane underneath stops them reaching the mattress. Protect-A-Bed pitches the Premium at bed-wetting and incontinence for that reason. The Premium is sold as fully waterproof rather than water-resistant, with the membrane under the whole sleeping surface.

Washing and care

Protect-A-Bed says the Premium can be washed more than 200 times and can go in a hot wash, which matters for allergy sufferers. The NHS advice on allergic rhinitis is to use synthetic bedding and covers and to wash bedding regularly at 60C and above. The catch is the drying: bleach destroys the polyurethane lining, and an overheated dryer can blister it, so tumble dry on medium heat for about 40 minutes with other linen, as the care instructions set out. Wash and dry it once before first use to soften it.

Does it help with dust mite allergies?

Only partly, and the evidence is weaker than the marketing. Protect-A-Bed says the membrane stops dust mites and bacteria breeding inside the mattress. But a Cochrane review of 54 trials involving 3,002 people with mite-sensitive asthma (Gøtzsche and Johansen, 2008), 26 of which tested mattress encasings, found no measurable improvement in symptoms, peak flow or medication use. Cochrane has since flagged that review as predating its current methods, so the fair reading is that the benefit is unproven, not that it has been ruled out. Protect-A-Bed also describes the Premium as top-surface waterproofing, so it is not a zipped, all-round encasement. Buy it to keep a mattress clean and dry; treat any allergy benefit as a bonus.

Who it suits

Parents of children still wetting the bed, anyone managing incontinence, and owners of an expensive mattress whose guarantee they want to keep get the most from it. Hot sleepers may prefer a smooth, cooler fabric. Delivery takes one to three working days and is free on orders over £90.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Premium is the protector to buy when spills, bed-wetting or incontinence are the concern, because the membrane is waterproof and the terry top soaks liquid up instead of letting it pool. It will not make a mattress allergy-proof on its own, and its regular price is high enough that one of Protect-A-Bed's frequent sales, which cut it by 40 to 50% in our checks, is the time to buy.”
