Simba Quilted Performance Mattress Protector reviewed

The Simba Quilted Performance Mattress Protector is Simba’s padded protector: a cotton cover filled with 200g of cotton cushioning, treated against dust mites, with a skirt that fits mattresses up to 40cm deep. It is the dearest of Simba’s protectors, with a regular price from £79 for a single, and is made in Spain.

What is it made of?

These details come from Simba’s UK product page. Simba does not sell this protector as waterproof, so it is not the one to rely on against a heavy or unnoticed spill. If spills are the main risk, the TripleShield Bamboo, which Simba tests to a hydrostatic head above 1,500mm, is the better buy.

Does it help with dust-mite allergy?

It is designed to. Simba says the anti-dust-mite treatment deters mites without pesticides and survives washing. The care label asks for a 40°C wash with non-biological detergent and a cool tumble dry. That is below the NHS advice for people with allergic rhinitis, which is to use synthetic bedding and covers and wash bedding regularly at 60°C and above. Allergy sufferers should weigh that gap, since the protector relies on its treatment rather than a hot wash.

Will it fit my mattress?

The skirt is cut for mattresses up to 40cm deep, which covers every Simba mattress from the 16cm Hybrid Kids to the 34cm Hybrid Ultra and most mattresses from other brands. It is sold in eight sizes, including the continental 90x200, 140x200 and 160x200, so match the size to the mattress rather than the bed frame. The padding adds a little height and softness, which is the point of this model; if you want the mattress to feel exactly as it did in the showroom, choose a thin, unpadded protector instead.

Why buy a protector at all?

For a Simba mattress there is a contractual reason. Simba states on its mattress pages that using a protector is required to keep the 10-year mattress guarantee valid, and its Natural Hybrid Source and Apex mattresses have non-removable covers. A protector is far cheaper to replace than a stained mattress.

Delivery is free to most of the UK, and orders placed before 1pm usually arrive the next working day. Protectors are not covered by Simba’s 200-night mattress trial: they fall under its 30-day return policy for items that are not mattresses, and Simba publishes no guarantee period for them.
