In detail

No firmness rating from the manufacturer.

Suitability by sleeping position

Hot sleepers
Children's beds
Allergy sufferers

The Soak&Sleep Waterproof Coolmax Mattress Protector is a quilted, fitted protector with a 40% Coolmax and 60% polyester top, a plump polyester fill and an edge-to-edge TPU waterproof base, held on by a 35cm elasticated jersey skirt. It is sold in seven sizes from single to emperor, singly or in packs of two.

How the layers work

Layer Material (seller spec) Purpose
Top fabric 40% Coolmax, 60% polyester Moves moisture away, cool, rustle-free
Filling Quilted polyester Adds a layer of cushioning
Base TPU waterproof layer, edge to edge Stops spills reaching the mattress
Skirt Elasticated jersey, 35cm deep Fits most mattress depths

Two details on the product page are worth knowing. The TPU base is attached only at its edges and left unquilted, so there are no stitch holes for liquid to leak through. And Soak&Sleep is candid that liquid left in the protector for a long time will eventually seep to the edges, so it should come off the bed promptly after an accident.

Coolmax and temperature

Coolmax is a polyester fibre brand from The LYCRA Company, which says the fibre’s moisture-wicking performance is built in and will not wash out. On a protector, that means sweat moves through the top layer instead of sitting against your skin, which is the usual complaint about waterproof protectors. Soak&Sleep pitches it at well-insulated homes and summer nights. For reference, the Sleep Charity recommends a bedroom of around 16 to 18°C.

Emperor 200 x 200cm £70 Not sold

Prices were checked on soakandsleep.com in September 2026, with every size in stock. Soak&Sleep suggests two protectors per bed so one can be washed while the other is in use, and the two-packs cost slightly less per protector.

Washing and allergies

The care label allows 40°C, and Soak&Sleep suggests washing every three to four weeks. If you are buying mainly for a dust-mite allergy, note that the NHS advises people with allergic rhinitis to wash bedding regularly at 60°C and above, which this protector cannot take.

Guarantee and returns

The protector carries a two-year guarantee, the maximum Soak&Sleep offers on protectors, and unused items can be returned within 365 days under the returns policy. It was designed in the UK and is made in China. The practical case for a waterproof layer is on Soak&Sleep’s own returns page: a protector is a condition of its 100-night mattress trial, and marked or dirty mattresses are refused.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Waterproof Coolmax protector is the pick for a warm sleeper who still needs a genuinely waterproof layer, and the two-packs make weekly washing practical. If dust-mite allergy is the main concern, note that its 40°C wash limit falls short of the 60°C the NHS advises for bedding.”
