The Jay-Be Simply Kids Anti-Allergy Bunk Mattress is a 16cm, foam-free sprung mattress made in the UK for bunk beds, and one of the few children’s bunk mattresses sold in three sizes: UK single (90x190) at £135, European single (90x200) at £145 and small double (120x190) at £189, all from Jay-Be’s own shop.

The anti-allergy fabric

Purotex is a fabric finish that, in Jay-Be’s description, uses probiotics to help reduce dust mites and allergens. We treat that as the maker’s claim rather than a medical one. For a child with a dust-mite allergy it is a sensible extra alongside hot-washed bedding, not a substitute for it. The cover fabric also carries the OEKO-TEX Standard 100 label, which means it has been tested for a list of harmful substances, and the comfort layers are e-Fibre, polyester fibre that Jay-Be makes largely from recycled plastic bottles, so there is no foam in the mattress.

Fit on a bunk

At 16cm it sits at the upper end of what bunk frames allow. BS EN 747-1 requires the top of the mattress to sit at least 16cm below the upper edge of the guard rail, so this mattress needs a rail at least 32cm above the slats; Jay-Be’s own product images remind buyers to make the same check. A frame marked with a 15cm maximum needs a slimmer mattress. The 90x200 version is the useful one for IKEA and other continental bunks, which take a longer mattress than a UK single frame.

Who it suits, and the drawbacks

The medium spring core suits primary-school children and younger teens on either bunk, and the price leaves room to buy two. Jay-Be publishes no sleep trial for it, only a 5-year guarantee, and does not say whether the spring unit is pocketed, so we have assumed the simpler construction when scoring it. Heavier teenagers will feel the thinner fibre comfort layers sooner than on a deeper pocket-sprung mattress.
