The Dreams Workshop Braybrook is a 21cm medium open coil mattress with a memory foam layer, from Dreams Workshop, the retailer’s own budget range. It is one of the cheapest sprung mattresses Dreams sells and is handmade in the UK.

Construction

An open coil unit links its springs together with wire, so the whole surface moves as one. Dreams describes open coil as affordable and durable, but a partner turning over is felt more than on individually wrapped pocket springs, which the National Bed Federation’s Bed Advice UK guide says “help to eliminate roll-together”. The same guide puts the usual minimum for an open coil at 325 coils in a 5ft king, and the Braybrook has 288 in a 4ft 6in double.

The memory foam layer softens the surface, and Dreams grades the result medium, 5 on our scale. It suits a guest room, a teenager’s bed or a short-term let better than a main bed shared every night.
