Coir does most of the work here, and it is the reason the mattress feels firm. The Little Green Sheep says the wool layer lets its mattresses meet UK furniture fire rules without fire-retardant chemicals, which is the main draw for parents who want natural materials next to their child.

Who it suits

A firm, slim mattress suits younger school-age children better than teenagers. The National Bed Federation’s advice on children’s mattresses notes that hypoallergenic fillings may help a child with asthma, eczema or rhinitis. Natural does not mean suitable for every allergy, though: a child with a latex allergy should not sleep on this mattress.

At 13cm it is slimmer than most children’s singles, which helps on a cabin bed where the guard rail is measured from the top of the mattress. A heavier teenager, on the other hand, has less to sink into, and a deeper pocket-sprung single will serve them better from about 12.
