Devon Duvets is a family-run maker of wool bedding, known in the UK for duvets, pillows and mattress toppers filled with traceable British wool and made by hand in its own workshops on the edge of Dartmoor. Its maker profile on the British Wool shop says founders Dick and Pauline Beijen moved to a Dartmoor smallholding with their children in 2008, began making craft items from their own flock’s wool, and went on to make what they call the UK’s first individually handcrafted British wool duvet.

Company and production

The business behind the brand, Devon Duvets Handcrafted Limited, was incorporated on 24 March 2010 and was called Devon Duvets Limited until 6 April 2022. It is registered in Plympton and filed under textile manufacturing. According to the British Wool profile, the wool is certified by British Wool, each topper is cut, layered, stitched and bound by the firm’s seamstresses without glues or bonding agents, and Devon Duvets is a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen. Made in Britain lists it as a member and states that all of its filled bedding is made in Britain. The range also includes British alpaca duvets and a plant-based Botanic line.

The wool topper and the terms

The trial, return and guarantee terms are set out on the Devon Duvets returns page, which says plainly that the company does not offer a “try before you buy” service and cannot take back bedding that has been used, unless the fault falls under the guarantee. Bespoke pieces cannot be returned at all but keep the guarantee.

Who it suits

Devon Duvets suits sleepers who run warm, want a natural fill with no synthetic lining, and care where the wool comes from. The topper adds cushioning and moisture handling more than it changes the support of the mattress underneath. It is the wrong buy if you want to test a topper on your own bed first, since a used one only goes back as a fault, and it costs noticeably more than a polyester-filled topper of the same size. Anyone allergic to wool should look elsewhere.
