Feel and buyer feedback

We rate it soft, 3 out of 10. Ten centimetres of hollowfibre softens a firm mattress decisively. At the time of writing the Habitat listing showed an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 23 reviews, with one buyer noting it was not hot even in a heatwave. Argos lists it as machine washable and tumble-dryer safe, which helps allergy sufferers too: Allergy UK says washing at 60°C or above kills dust mites, so check whether the care label allows that temperature.

Hollowfibre compresses where you lie, so shake the topper out regularly. Like any topper, it adds softness, not support.

Who it suits

The Hotel Collection 10cm is the Silentnight topper to choose if you want a plump, pillowy bed and want one that Argos lists as machine washable and tumble-dryer safe. It suits side sleepers and lighter adults, and it is a good way to make a firm guest-room mattress more welcoming. Heavier sleepers and front sleepers are better served by a thinner or firmer topper.

A fibre topper is not waterproof, so if spills are a worry, a mattress protector is still the layer that does that job. With a 10cm topper, check that your protector and fitted sheet are deep enough to go over both the mattress and the topper.
