Härte: MittelweichA 13cm Yorkshire-made mattress enhancer with hemp, flax and British wool fillings around steel springs and a seven-year guarantee.
The John Lewis British Natural Collection Wool Mattress Enhancer is a 13cm sprung topper handmade in Yorkshire from hemp, flax and British and Yorkshire wool fillings with British steel springs. It sits between a topper and a mattress in both depth and price, and it is the luxury pick in our John Lewis mattress topper ranking.
The John Lewis product page lists British-produced natural fillings, hemp, flax and British and Yorkshire wool, which John Lewis describes as soft, springy, light and absorbent, helping to keep you warm and dry. The top and bottom fabric is woven in-house without fire-retardant chemical treatments, because wool is naturally fire-retardant. Where an ordinary topper adds a layer of fibre or foam, the springs inside the enhancer give it some of the bounce and recovery of a mattress.
It arrives rolled, and John Lewis recommends airing it for a few hours after unwrapping to let any natural scent from the fillings fade. It is dual-sided, and John Lewis recommends flipping it every few months and using it with a cotton mattress protector. It is spot clean only with a damp cloth and mild soap and must not be vacuumed or washed. It carries a seven-year guarantee, the longest of any John Lewis topper.
On wool’s comfort claims, the research is modest. A 2016 sleep laboratory study by Shin et al. with 17 participants found no effect on sleep from wool rather than polyester bedding, so buy the enhancer for its depth and make rather than for a proven sleep benefit.

Like every John Lewis topper, it can only be returned unopened, unused and with its seals intact unless it is faulty, and there is no sleep trial. Standard delivery was free on orders over £50 (£4.50 below that) and Click and Collect free over £40 when we checked in October 2026.
It suits someone with a good, supportive mattress who wants a deeper, natural-filled sleeping surface and the feel of a hand-finished bed. At this price, compare it with a new mattress first, because it will not fix one that has lost its support. The National Bed Federation recommends replacing a mattress every seven to eight years, as Furniture News reported.
