The RattanTree Folding Floor Mattress is a spare bed that packs away. Four foam sections fold into a block with carry handles and open out to a full UK single, small double, double or king. It is sold in 10, 15 and 20cm depths, and prices start at £79.99 for a 10cm single.

Each section has a gel memory foam layer over high-density support foam, inside a jacquard knitted cover that unzips for washing. The underside is a non-slip fabric, which matters on laminate, tiles or a caravan floor. RattanTree rates the support foam medium, which we place at 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

UK size Open (cm) Folded footprint (cm) Price, 10cm depth
Single 90x190 90x47.5 £79.99
Small double 120x190 120x47.5 £94.99
Double 135x190 135x47.5 £109.99
King 150x200 150x50 £124.99

Folded, the stack stands 40cm tall for the 10cm depth, 60cm for 15cm and 80cm for 20cm, according to the dimension chart on the product page. Measure the cupboard or car boot before choosing the thickest version.

Depth matters more here than on a normal mattress, because there is no bed base underneath to add support. The 10cm version works as a floor sofa, a play mat or a night on the floor for a child. Adults staying longer need the 20cm depth, and the most expensive configuration, a 20cm king, is £154.99.

RattanTree also sells a conventional rolled mattress, the Gel Memory Foam Mattress, from £89.99 for a 15cm single. That model has one solid core and a firm reverse side, so it is the better spare bed if it can stay on a bed frame. The folding version earns its place when the room has to go back to being a study or a playroom, and its cover comes off for the washing machine, which a mattress used by a run of different guests needs more often than most.

Delivery to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland is free, and there is no trial period. The returns and exchanges policy gives 30 days from delivery for items in new, resellable condition and original packaging, with return carriage paid by you for a change of mind. A folding mattress is at least easier to repack than a rolled one. Faults are covered by a one-year warranty, on top of your statutory right to claim for up to six years, five in Scotland, set out on GOV.UK.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“A practical spare bed for occasional guests, sleepovers or a campervan, from £79.99 for a 10cm single. Choose the 20cm depth for adults who will sleep on it for more than a couple of nights, and look elsewhere for an everyday bed.”
