“Buy the pillow that matches how you sleep, make sure you can return it, and only then look at the discount.”
Match the pillow to how you sleep
Side sleepers need the most height, enough to fill the gap between shoulder and ear. Back sleepers want a medium height that keeps the chin level, and front sleepers the lowest, softest pillow they can find. An adjustable pillow, with layers or cubes you take out, is the safest sale buy when you are unsure, because you can change the height after it arrives. Check the size too, since most of the head pillows here are smaller than a standard 50 x 75cm UK pillow and sit loosely in a standard case.

Know which cooling claim you are buying
Several pillows on this list are sold on keeping you cool, and they go about it in different ways. The Emma Adapt Cooling uses a cooling foam on its firm face, the Emma Comfort Cooling a temperature-regulating Outlast fabric under its cover, and the Simba Hybrid and Silentnight Airmax let air move through mesh borders. Visco memory foam tends to hold warmth, so a warm sleeper who wants foam support should choose the Adapt Cooling or the Simba Hybrid over the plain Emma Adapt.
Check the returns before you open the packaging
Online purchases normally come with 14 days to cancel, but regulation 28 of the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 ends that right for sealed goods “not suitable for return due to health protection or hygiene reasons, if they become unsealed after delivery”. The law does not name pillows, but many sellers treat an unwrapped pillow as exactly that and refuse it. Emma, Simba and TEMPUR each give a 30-night pillow trial, which is the real protection in a sale. Simba asks for the pillow back in its original packaging, so keep the box until you have decided. Silentnight states no pillow trial on its product pages.
Know when a pillow is due
A pillow is due when it no longer springs back after you fold it in half, when a fibre filling has gone lumpy, or when you have to fold it to get enough height. Fibre pillows reach that point sooner than foam, so a budget fibre pillow is a short-term buy and a foam or adjustable pillow the better use of a sale discount if you want it to last.
Judge the price per pillow
Many brands sell pillows in pairs, and the second pillow is often where the saving sits, so work out the price per pillow before you compare offers. If you are buying a mattress at the same time, check whether pillows come with it, since Emma was including free pillows, a protector and a duvet with its mattresses when we checked on 26 October.
Spot a real pillow deal
A crossed-out price is only worth something if the seller really charged it. The Advertising Standards Authority’s guidance on savings claims says “the higher reference price should have been charged for a longer duration than the promotional price”, and it expects advertisers to hold at least three months of pricing history, so compare any sale price with the regular prices above. Anthony Screen, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for community safety, put it more bluntly before the November 2025 sales, “if a deal looks too good to be true, it probably is.” Our Black Friday mattress guide explains how to read a sale price, and our best Black Friday mattress deals apply the same checks to mattresses.
