The Aspire Natural Cashmere Pillowtop is a 26cm hand-tufted mattress built around a traditional open coil spring unit, with a pillowtop of cashmere and wool blend over a polycotton rebound layer. Aspire makes it in the UK and rates it medium. It is one of the few pillowtops on the market with open coil springs underneath, and in a 4ft6 double it costs £490.01.

Open coil under a natural pillowtop

Open coil, or Bonnell, springs are linked together by wire, so the mattress moves as one surface. The National Bed Federation explains that open coil springs are connected top and bottom by a helical wire with an outer rod strengthening the perimeter, and notes that the type is not as popular as it once was. Aspire describes this unit as having a medium-soft spring tension, with an edge-wired support system and side stitching so the mattress holds its shape at the edge.

Layer, top to bottom What Aspire uses
Sleep surface Woven damask, hand tufted
Pillowtop 10mm, 250gsm cashmere and wool blend over a 50mm polycotton rebound layer
Comfort fibre 400gsm recycled polyester layers
Spring unit Aspire Bonnell open coil, up to 460 springs, between recycled felt pads
Base 400gsm fibre and woven damask

The pillowtop softens what would otherwise be a lively, springy surface, so the feel is a cushioned top over a bouncy base. Aspire also builds in vents on both sides to let air through. The trade-off of open coil is partner disturbance: when one person turns over, the linked springs carry the movement across. For a single sleeper that does not matter; for a couple, Aspire’s pocket sprung pillowtops are the better choice. Full details are on the product page.

Prices read on 15 October 2026, with no reduction shown. Aspire’s long-standing reductions on its numbered pillowtops mean that the 3000 Wool Cashmere and Silk Pillowtop, with pocket springs, cost less than this model in every size on the same day. Check both before you order.

Who it suits

A single sleeper in a spare room or a teenager’s bed is the natural fit: the open coil gives a bouncy, supportive base and the cashmere pillowtop takes the edge off it. At 26cm it also sits lower than Aspire’s deeper pillowtops, which suits a bed frame with a low headboard. Delivery is free to the doorstep on the UK mainland, and Aspire quotes 10 to 15 working days for a flat mattress because most are made to order.

Break-in and terms

As with every natural-filled Aspire mattress, expect it to feel considerably firmer for the first two weeks before it settles. There is no trial, and a mattress with a broken hygiene seal falls outside the 14-day cancellation right. The 5-year warranty is pro rata after year one, according to Aspire’s guarantee page.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“It suits a single sleeper who likes a bouncy, traditional spring feel with a soft natural top. Couples, and anyone comparing prices, should look at Aspire's pocket sprung 3000 pillowtop first, which costs less and isolates movement better.”
