Starlight Beds 5cm Memory Foam Mattress Topper reviewed

The Starlight Beds 5cm Memory Foam Mattress Topper is a UK-made memory foam topper sold direct by Starlight Beds, from £51.99 for a single to £97.95 for a super king. At 5cm it reaches the depth the National Bed Federation suggests as the minimum for a topper that changes how a bed feels.

What is inside

Starlight’s product page lists a single layer of memory foam in a removable Pisa fabric zip cover that can be machine washed at a low temperature, with an anti-slip base and corner straps to stop it creeping. Starlight says the topper is made in the UK and complies with BS 7177:2008, the British standard for the ignition resistance of mattresses and divans, at domestic level. It arrives vacuum-packed and rolled. Starlight does not publish the foam’s density, the usual guide to how long memory foam keeps its shape.

Bed Advice UK, the National Bed Federation’s consumer site, advises buying a topper “at least 5 cm (2 inches) deep”, because “Anything thinner is unlikely to make a noticeable difference in comfort.”

How it feels and who it suits

We rate it medium soft, 4 out of 10. Memory foam softens with body heat and lets the shoulder and hip sink in, which is what side sleepers on a firm mattress need, while back sleepers get a softer surface without losing the mattress’s support. The trade-off is warmth: foam holds more heat than fibre, so hot sleepers may prefer a breathable fibre topper.
