The Woolroom Deluxe Washable Waterproof Wool Mattress Protector is a 250gsm British wool protector with a breathable, TPU-coated organic cotton layer underneath, and it is the only waterproof protector in Woolroom’s range. It costs £219.99 in a double at the regular price, which puts it at the top of the market for a protector, so the case for it rests on the wool rather than on the waterproofing alone.

Specification

The Woolroom product page gives the build below. The wool is Woolroom’s machine-washable grade, traceable through Wool ID, and the protector contains no synthetic fibres apart from the TPU coating on the waterproof layer, which Woolroom states contains no PFAS.

The breathability figure is useful but not directly comparable across brands. ASTM E96 is a family of methods, and ASTM itself warns that a water vapour transmission rate measured under one set of conditions does not necessarily predict the rate under another. Woolroom does not say which method or conditions it used.

Sizes and prices

Four UK sizes are sold, with no small double or European sizes. Prices are regular prices at the time of writing (September 2026); Woolroom was running a 25% sale on all four when we checked.

Size Dimensions (cm) Regular price
Single 90x190 £189.99
Double 135x190 £219.99
King 150x200 £249.99
Super king 180x200 £279.99

What it does well, and what it does not

The National Bed Federation’s care guide says to always use a mattress protector and to clean stains as soon as they appear, and this one covers both jobs while adding a thin wool layer. Woolroom claims it takes away up to 70% of the heat a hot mattress gives off. That figure is Woolroom’s own and we could not find an independent test behind it, but a wool layer on top of memory foam is a common and sensible fix for sleeping hot.

Dust mites are a different matter. The protector carries the Allergy UK seal like the rest of Woolroom’s bedding, yet a study of 107 Melbourne homes in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 1997 (Hill et al.) measured mite allergen at 113 micrograms per gram of dust on wool mattress coverings against 0.4 on impermeable encasements. If a dust mite allergy is the main reason you are buying, a zip-round encasement is the tool that has the evidence behind it.

Care needs attention. The specification panel says 40°C while Woolroom’s own FAQ says a 30°C wool cycle; the cooler setting is the safer choice for wool. It must be line dried, never tumble dried, and stored in its calico bag rather than vacuum packed.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Buy it if you sleep hot on a memory foam or latex mattress and also want spill protection, since it is the only waterproof protector Woolroom makes. If you only need a barrier against spills or dust mites, a synthetic protector or a zip-round encasement does that job for a fraction of the £219.99 double price.”
