The Scooms 100% Pure Cotton Mattress Protector is a quilted fitted protector made entirely of cotton: a 200 thread count percale casing, 200gsm of cotton filling and a fully elasticated cotton skirt, with no waterproof membrane. It comes in a standard version for mattresses up to 30cm deep and a deep version for up to 40cm, in five UK sizes from single to emperor.

What it is made of

Layer Material (Scooms specification) What it does
Casing 100% cotton percale, 200 thread count Smooth, breathable sleeping surface
Filling 100% cotton, 200gsm Light cushioning that absorbs sweat
Skirt Fully elasticated 100% cotton Holds the protector on a 30cm or 40cm mattress
Waterproof layer None Liquids can pass through

Scooms states on its product page that the protector is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified (certificate 137 CITEVE), is made in small batches by a family firm in Portugal and ships in a cotton storage bag without plastic packaging. It is cut slightly oversized to allow for shrinkage in the first wash.

Not waterproof, and what that means

The missing membrane is the trade-off to understand before buying. In the spill test Expert Reviews ran for its February 2026 review, 100ml of coffee left a 36 x 30cm stain on the protector and a 43 x 30cm stain on the sheet underneath, although the marks washed out at 40°C. The same review found the protector completely silent, which is the benefit of having no plastic layer. For a child’s bed, or for a mattress whose guarantee requires it to stay clean, a waterproof protector is the safer choice.

Temperature and feel

Ideal Home named it the best mattress protector overall of the 15 bestselling models it tried, citing its breathability for warm sleepers. The same review notes that it feels a little thicker and stiffer than cheaper protectors, which may slightly change the feel of a very soft memory foam mattress. Cotton quilting also holds water, and Ideal Home found it took at least twice as long to dry as a protector with a polyester mix.

Care, returns and guarantee

Scooms advises a 30 to 40°C wash with non-bio detergent every one to four weeks, followed by line drying or a low tumble dry. That is below the 60°C at which Allergy UK says house dust mites are killed, so it is not the protector for a dust-mite allergy routine. Unused, unwashed protectors can be returned within 30 nights in their original packaging, UK returns are free, and there is a one-year manufacturing guarantee.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“The Scooms is the protector to choose if you sleep warm and want nothing synthetic between you and the mattress, since the casing, the 200gsm filling and the skirt are all cotton. It will not stop a spilt drink or a child's accident, so for a child's bed or a mattress whose guarantee depends on staying clean, a waterproof model is the safer buy.”
