Source: the M&S product page, which also says the protector guards against pet dander and pollen. M&S appears as a manufacturer in the Allergy UK approved products directory, whose listings are reviewed or tested and approved by Allergy Research Ltd. The product page attributes the endorsement to the fibres rather than showing a seal for the finished protector, so we do not list it as Allergy UK certified.

Why a protector helps with dust mite allergy

House dust mites live in bedding, and Allergy UK describes house dust mite allergy as very common and associated with triggering or worsening asthma, eczema and year-round allergic rhinitis. According to Allergy UK’s house dust mite factsheet, mites are about a quarter of a millimetre long, and it is usually proteins in their droppings, around 20 a day from each mite, that trigger symptoms, even after the mite has died. A protector that goes in the washing machine puts a barrier between you and a mattress that cannot be washed at all. The NHS advice on allergic rhinitis is to use synthetic bedding and covers and to wash bedding regularly at 60C or above. This protector is synthetic, but its care label stops at 40C, so the anti-allergy fibres rather than hot washing do most of the work.

Prices by size

UK size Dimensions Regular price
Single 90 x 190 cm £35
Double 135 x 190 cm £42.50
King 150 x 200 cm £47
Super king 180 x 200 cm £52

Who should look elsewhere?

M&S does not describe this protector as waterproof, so it will not stop a spilt drink or a child’s accident reaching the mattress; for that, choose a protector with a waterproof layer. Mattresses deeper than 30 cm, which includes many pillow-top hybrids, need the Advanced Allergy Protection Extra Deep version, which M&S sizes for mattresses up to 38 cm. No trial or guarantee period is stated.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Buy the M&S Advanced Allergy Protection if dust mites are the problem and you want a soft quilted layer that goes in the machine at 40C. It is not sold as waterproof, so households worried about spills need a waterproof protector, and mattresses deeper than 30 cm will not fit.”
