The Futons247 Luxury Pocket FutoFlex is a 17cm futon mattress for everyday sleeping that combines a traditional lambswool and cotton-felt futon with a centre layer of 2-inch pocket springs. It is hand-made to order by The Futon Shop Ltd in Plymouth, and the product page describes it as a softer, medium feel than most futon mattresses.

Sizes and prices

Size Dimensions Price (Panama cotton)
Double 140 x 190 cm £535
Futon king 150 x 200 cm £615
King 160 x 200 cm £855
Super king 180 x 200 cm £975

The upgrade fabrics cost extra: Tibetan adds £80 and Carrera cotton £150 in every size.

Construction and feel

Under the cover sit a layer of pure lambswool, two layers of cotton felt, the pocket-spring unit, two more layers of cotton felt and lambswool again, all buttoned through. Wool and cotton breathe and handle moisture well, so the FutoFlex sleeps cooler than a foam-cored futon. We rate the feel medium, about 5 out of 10, which makes it the most forgiving futon here for side sleepers. Futons247 notes it settles by a couple of centimetres over the first months, as all felt futons do.

Fire safety and delivery

Most fabric options are labelled “FR free”: instead of a chemical fire-retardant treatment, a wool-guard layer replaces the outer lambswool so the futon still meets the cigarette and match tests of the UK furniture fire safety regulations. It suits slatted bed frames, futon frames and three-seat futon sofas. Allow two to three weeks for manufacture, then a two-person crew delivers it to the room of your choice; no trial or guarantee is published.

Unser Urteil

Fazit
„If you want a futon as your only bed, the Pocket FutoFlex is our pick: natural wool and cotton felt with a layer of small springs that takes the hard edge off a traditional futon. It costs more than a sofa bed futon and takes up to three weeks to arrive, which is the price of a hand-made everyday mattress.“
