Silentnight Airmax 5cm Mattress Topper im Test

The Silentnight Airmax 5cm is a medium-feel hollowfibre mattress topper sold at Argos, built in two layers with air-mesh side walls so that it softens a hard mattress while letting warm air escape. It is the middle depth of the Airmax family: Argos also sells a thicker 8cm Airmax, and Silentnight’s own infographics label this one the Airmax 500.

How it is made

According to the Argos product page, the topper has a 100% polyester cover and reverse around a 100% polyester hollowfibre filling, with elasticated straps at each corner. The side panels are an open mesh rather than solid fabric. Silentnight’s idea is that air moves between the layers and out through the sides as you shift during the night, which is the main thing that separates the Airmax from a plain quilted topper of the same depth. The filling is non-allergenic, and the cover can be washed at 40°C and tumble dried.

Sizes and Argos prices

These were regular prices with no sale running on 5 October 2026. There is no small double. The gap between sizes is small, so a couple pays little more than a single sleeper, and the same catalogue is sold on habitat.co.uk, fulfilled by Argos.

Feel and who it suits

Silentnight describes the Airmax range as medium, and 5cm of fibre is enough to take the hardness out of a firm mattress without the sink-in feel of a 10cm topper. That makes it a sensible match for back sleepers and for side sleepers on a mattress that is only slightly too firm. Side sleepers whose hips and shoulders ache on a very hard mattress will get more pressure relief from memory foam, though at several times the price.

On argos.co.uk the topper carried a 4.5 out of 5 rating from 4,796 reviews when we checked in October 2026, the largest number of reviews we found on any fibre topper Argos sells.

Warmth

Heat is where the Airmax earns its place. The Sleep Charity puts the ideal bedroom temperature at around 16 to 18°C and warns that rooms above 24°C are likely to cause restlessness. A deep fibre or foam topper holds warmth against you, while the Airmax’s mesh sides give that warmth somewhere to go, which is why we rate it the cooler choice of the fibre toppers in our Argos topper comparison.

Limits

Like every fibre topper, it compresses where you lie and needs shaking out and rotating to keep its loft. It also cannot rescue a mattress that sags: the National Bed Federation’s Bed Advice UK lists sagging and lumps among the signs a mattress needs replacing. Silentnight gives a 2-year guarantee, and Argos takes unwanted items back within 30 days, though its returns policy warns that a used item may not be refunded.
