The Sofabed Gallery Ultimate Pocket Sprung is a 12cm, two-sided replacement mattress for 2-fold sofa beds, the webbed or slatted metal actions that fold the mattress once before the frame drops under the seat cushions. Sofabed Gallery, a sofa bed specialist with a showroom in Hull, has it made to its own specification in the UK and sells it direct from £185.30 in its chair-bed width.

Sofabed Gallery allows a tolerance of up to 2cm on the stated dimensions and asks you to replace like with like, so measure the old mattress, not the frame, before ordering.

Feel and who it suits

Sofabed Gallery rates the support as medium, which we record as 5 out of 10. Pocket springs move independently, so two people sharing a pull-out double disturb each other less than on an open coil unit, and the spring count is almost four times that of the shop’s own Deluxe Sprung open coil grade in the same width. This is the mattress we would choose for a sofa bed slept on several nights a week, or for a guest who stays a fortnight rather than a weekend.

Fire label and the catch

Sofabed Gallery states that its mattresses pass the domestic flammability tests of BS 7177 and BS EN 597-1 and 597-2; as SATRA explains, that low-hazard level means resistance to a smouldering cigarette and a match-flame equivalent, not the CRIB 5 level required in hotels. The catch is depth. At 12cm the Ultimate only suits 2-fold frames built for a deeper mattress, and Sofabed Gallery warns that its 2-fold mattresses will not fit a 3-fold action.
