The Silentnight Comfort Control Multi-Zone Heated Mattress Topper is an electric, quilted topper with a separate controller for each side of the bed, nine heat settings and a pre-heat timer. Tesco Marketplace sells it as the Multi-Zone Heated Quilted Mattress Topper in double, king and super king.

How it works

The Tesco listing explains that each half of the topper has its own control and that the top and bottom of the bed heat separately across nine settings, so one partner can warm their feet more than the other. A built-in timer pre-heats the bed, overheat protection is built in, and the controllers detach so the topper can go in the washing machine at 40°C. The quilted layer is 2.5cm deep, and Silentnight gives a 3-year guarantee.

Running cost and safe use

Silentnight says that pre-heating the bed for an hour on a low setting costs as little as 1p, and it recommends switching the topper off before you fall asleep. Fire services give similar advice for electric blankets. Manchester Fire and Rescue’s electric blanket guidance says to unplug before getting into bed unless the controls are designed for safe all-night use, never to use a hot water bottle at the same time, and to replace a blanket once it is more than 10 years old. Folding or bunching can cause uneven heating, so store it flat or loosely rolled.

Feel and who it suits

As a comfort layer the topper is thin, and we rate it medium soft, 4 out of 10. It suits people who feel the cold, couples with different ideas of a warm bed, and anyone who would rather warm the bed than heat the whole house at night. It is not a way to soften a hard mattress; for that, a deeper fibre or memory foam topper does more.
