The Futons247 Neru Futon Bed Roll is a 9cm roll-up futon that meets UK fire regulations without any fire-retardant treatment on its fillings or its fabric. It is a development of the company’s Monk bed roll, hand-made in Plymouth, and the product page recommends it for guests and as a firm, traditional futon for floor sleeping.

Why “FR free” matters

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations require upholstery to pass a cigarette test and covers to pass a match test, and most futons and mattresses meet that with fire-retardant treated fillings or fabrics. The Neru does it with a woven wool-guard sheet top and bottom instead, since wool resists ignition naturally. That makes it a candidate for buyers with chemical sensitivities or a preference for untreated natural bedding.

Specification Neru bed roll
Layers Wool-guard sheet, lambswool, two layers of cotton felt, wool-guard sheet
Fabric 100% cotton Panama, clay or blue
Depth About 9 cm when new
Rolled 140 cm long, 47 cm across (double)
Price £269 single (90 x 190 cm), £299 double (140 x 190 cm)

Who it suits

Like any bed roll this thin, the Neru is firm, about 8 out of 10 by our assessment, and best for back sleepers, guests and floor sleepers who want the traditional feel. Wool and cotton breathe well, so it stays cool, but on a solid floor it should be rolled up or aired regularly to let moisture escape. Each Neru is made to order and delivered in 10 to 14 days on a pre-arranged weekday. No trial or guarantee is published.

Unser Urteil

Fazit
„The Neru is the bed roll for buyers who want no fire-retardant chemicals in their bed at all, which is rare in the UK: wool does the job instead. You pay extra over the Monk for that, and it is just as firm.“
