The Emma Adapt Pillow is a 70 x 40 cm memory foam pillow with three layers you can take out one at a time: gel memory foam, visco memory foam and a springier HRX foam base. At £69 it is the lowest-priced pillow on Emma’s UK shop, and Emma describes it as the firmest of its four pillows before any layer is removed. Until January 2026 it was sold as the Emma Original Pillow, also listed as the Original Foam Pillow.

What the three layers do

The layers sit in a fixed order inside a stretchy cover, which is what lets the cover fit snugly whether you keep one layer or all three. Details come from Emma’s UK product page.

Position Material Role
Top Gel memory foam Shapes itself around the neck
Middle Visco memory foam Spreads the weight of head and shoulders, keeps some warmth
Base HRX high-resiliency foam Springy foundation that stops the stack bottoming out
Cover 98% polyester, 2% elastane Elastic, removable, washable at up to 60°C

A firm pillow you can make lower

For neck pain, the NHS advises a low, firm pillow and keeping your head at the same height as the rest of your body while you sleep. The Adapt is firm by design, and taking out one or two layers is how you make it low. Side sleepers with broad shoulders usually keep the full stack, back sleepers tend to remove a layer, and anyone who needs it flatter still can drop to the base alone. The NHS adds that most neck pain clears within a few weeks and that a GP should see it if it does not, so treat any pillow as a comfort aid rather than a treatment.

How it feels

We rate it medium firm, 7 out of 10, the firmest Emma pillow we have rated. Memory foam responds slowly, so your head settles into it rather than bouncing, and the 990 g pillow does not slump during the night. The trade-off is warmth. Emma itself says the visco layer retains some heat, which is pleasant in a cold bedroom and less so in July. Its 246 reviews on Emma’s UK shop averaged 4.2 out of 5 on 8 October 2026, the lowest of the four, and the written reviews split on whether the foam is too firm. Good Housekeeping’s panel, as quoted by Emma, found it comfortable and liked being able to remove one or two layers.

Who it suits

Pick it if you sleep on your side or back, prefer a pillow that holds firm and want to fine-tune the height without paying for the cooling version. Front sleepers and anyone who likes to scrunch a pillow into shape will find foam layers stiff. Emma makes it in the UK, according to its product page, and backs it with a 30-night trial, free returns and a 2-year guarantee.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“Choose the Adapt if you sleep on your side or back and want a firm memory foam pillow you can lower one layer at a time. Warm sleepers should step up to the Adapt Cooling, because the visco layer here holds on to heat. Its 4.2 rating from 246 shop reviews shows it divides opinion more than its siblings, so make use of the 30-night trial.”
