The Emma Adapt Cooling Pillow is a 40 x 70 cm pillow built from three foam layers inside a knitted cover. Two of the layers can come out, and the firm face is a cooling foam. At £99 it is the most expensive of Emma’s four UK pillows, and the one Emma points back sleepers towards. A notice on Emma’s product page says it was renamed from the Emma Premium Foam Pillow in January 2026, so older reviews and some retailers still use that name.

Layers and how you adjust it

Each layer has its own job. The table follows the order on Emma’s UK product page.

Layer Material What it does
Cooling layer ThermoSync foam Firm face of the pillow, meant to stop heat building up
Support layer HRX high-resiliency foam Holds the head and neck and spreads pressure
Comfort layer Soft foam Softer face when you flip the pillow over
Cover 98% polyester, 2% elastane knit Removable and machine washable

Emma’s own advice is to keep all three layers if you sleep on your side, take out one thin layer for back sleeping and remove both for front sleeping. Turning the pillow over swaps the firm cooling face for the softer one, so a single pillow covers several set-ups and you do not need to guess your ideal height before ordering.

Does the cooling foam make a difference?

Heat affects sleep more than most people assume. A review in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology (Okamoto-Mizuno and Mizuno, 2012) found that heat exposure increases wakefulness and cuts both slow-wave and REM sleep, and it names bedding as a key part of the microclimate around the body. Solid foam holds warmth, which is why a memory foam pillow is often the first thing a warm sleeper complains about. Emma tackles this with the cooling foam on the firm side and a cover designed to move moisture away from your face. That is why we rate it cooler than the standard Adapt Pillow. It is still foam, though, and if you overheat badly the microfibre Comfort Cooling Pillow breathes more freely.

Feel, weight and care

We rate it medium firm, 6 out of 10, in line with Emma’s own description of medium to firm support. At 1.3 kg it is the heaviest pillow in the range, which tells you how much foam is inside, and it keeps its shape instead of flattening under your head during the night. The elasticated cover pulls off and goes in the machine. Emma’s care notes allow up to 60°C while its FAQ says 40°C, so we would stick to 40°C. The foam layers cannot be washed. Emma says to let them dry out if anything is spilled, so a pillow protector is worth adding.

Who it suits, and who should skip it

It suits back and side sleepers who want firm, even support and find ordinary foam pillows too warm. Front sleepers can make it work with both thin layers removed, but a foam block is still more pillow than most of them need. At 40 x 70 cm it is narrower and shorter than a standard 50 x 75 cm UK pillow, so a regular pillowcase will sit loose. Emma gives a 30-night trial with free returns and a full refund, plus a 2-year guarantee. On the UK shop it held 4.6 out of 5 from 188 reviews on 8 October 2026.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“We recommend the Adapt Cooling if you sleep on your back or side, like firm support and find ordinary memory foam too warm. If heat is not an issue, the cheaper Adapt Pillow offers the same three-layer idea. Soft-pillow fans and most front sleepers will be happier with a microfibre pillow, and the 30-night trial lets you find out at no cost.”
