The Futon Company Comfy Futon is an 11cm sofa bed futon with a layer of foam sandwiched between cotton-rich fibre layers. Futon Company makes it by hand to order in its London workshop and designed it for a sofa that is turned into a bed every night: the product page describes it as its Authentic futon plus a foam layer for extra depth when sitting and more resilience when sleeping.

A traditional all-fibre futon slowly compacts where you sit and lie, so it needs turning and airing to stay even. The foam layer in the Comfy resists that, which is why it is the Futon Company model to choose for daily use. We rate the feel medium-firm, around 6 out of 10: firmer than a pocket-sprung mattress, but with enough give for back and front sleepers. Lighter side sleepers may want a topper over it. A 2003 trial in The Lancet found that people with chronic low-back pain did better on a medium-firm mattress than on a firm one, a useful benchmark for anyone sleeping on a futon full time.
The price covers the mattress only: no frame, and the poly-cotton case is not removable, so most buyers add one of Futon Company’s 17 washable covers. Futon Company asks you to rotate the futon once a month and to air it every day when it is used as a bed. No sleep trial or guarantee is published, but with 21 shops from Brighton to Edinburgh you can try it before ordering, which few futon makers offer.
