Firmness: Medium firm · 100-night sleep trialThe John Lewis Natural Collection is a 100% British wool topper, handcrafted in Lancashire, with a two-year guarantee.
The John Lewis Natural Collection British Wool Mattress Topper is a 100% wool topper in a 233 thread count cotton cover, handcrafted in Lancashire from British wool and priced from £85 for a single. It is the high-street natural-fibre choice for people who want a softer bed and are happy to give up machine washing for it.
The John Lewis product page lists a 100% cotton cover, a 100% wool filling and a fit for mattresses up to 36cm deep, with the United Kingdom as the country of origin. The double weighs 1,714g. John Lewis does not publish the topper’s depth. Care is the catch. It is sponge clean or dry clean only, must not be tumble dried or ironed, and should be aired for 24 hours before first use. John Lewis also advises against using it with an electric blanket, which it says would significantly limit its effectiveness.

At the time of writing (September 2026) John Lewis takes 20% off this topper until 3 October 2026, after which the regular prices above apply. Standard delivery is free on orders over £50.
John Lewis says wool regulates temperature and naturally inhibits the growth of bacteria. The research on wool in bed is thinner than that suggests. A 2016 sleep laboratory study in Nature and Science of Sleep (Shin et al.), with 17 participants and co-authored by the wool industry body Australian Wool Innovation, found that wool sleepwear shortened the time taken to fall asleep compared with cotton, but it found no effect of wool bedding on sleep. Treat the temperature claims as plausible rather than proven.
For a dust mite allergy, the leaflet from Cambridge University Hospitals says bedding that cannot take a 60° wash can be dry cleaned instead, which this topper allows. It carries a two-year guarantee but no sleep trial, and John Lewis only takes it back if it is unopened and unused, unless it is faulty. It suits a firm mattress and a sleeper who prefers natural materials. It is not for anyone who wants to put their topper in the washing machine or who sleeps with an electric blanket.
“The John Lewis British Wool topper brings natural wool and a Lancashire make to a firm mattress for well under the price of a handmade specialist wool topper. The trade-off is care, as it can only be sponged or dry cleaned.”Go to shop →
