Abaca Snowdon Organic Pocket Sprung Mattress reviewed

The Abaca Snowdon is a 20cm pocket sprung mattress made by hand in West Wales, and it is one of the few UK mattresses certified organic as a finished product rather than layer by layer. Its sewn-in label states that the Soil Association certifies it as made with organic materials to the Global Organic Textile Standard.

Construction

Abaca’s product page describes a hand-framed pocket spring unit under needled organic wool of different weights and densities, 2,000g per square metre in all, held in place with felt tufts and covered in unbleached organic herringbone cotton. The label gives the fibre content as 85% organic wool, 13% organic cotton and 2% polypropylene. There is no foam and no latex inside, which suits anyone who wants to avoid both.

Under the GOTS rules, a product labelled “made with organic” must contain at least 70% certified organic fibre, and one labelled “organic” at least 95%.

Choosing the tension

The Snowdon comes in soft, medium and firm, and Abaca links the choice to body weight:

We score the medium version 5 out of 10. Above 16 stone Abaca gives no recommendation, so heavier sleepers should ask before ordering. The label also advises turning and rotating the mattress regularly to even out wear, which is normal for a wool-filled mattress.

Prices and buying terms

Each mattress is made to order, with a lead time of four to six weeks. Delivery is free to most of mainland UK; the Scottish Highlands and islands, the Isle of Man, the Isle of Wight and Northern Ireland are quoted separately. There is no sleep trial. Abaca will exchange the mattress for a firmer or softer one if you report a problem within 14 days, and it guarantees the mattress for 10 years.
