The Simply Thermal Triple Filled Mattress Topper is B&M’s own-label fibre topper and the cheapest topper the chain sells, at £14 for a double and £16 for a king. It adds a deep-quilted, padded layer that makes a bed feel thicker and warmer.

What is inside

According to the pack shown on B&M’s product page, the filling is spiral hollowfibre, 100% polyester, in a deep-quilted polyester cover with elastic corners, and the whole topper is machine washable. The pack carries B&M Retail’s address and says it is made in China. B&M lists the double at about 137 x 190cm, a little wider than a standard 135cm UK double, and the king at about 150 x 200cm. No depth, guarantee or wash temperature is given.

Warmth is the selling point

Simply Thermal is B&M’s energy-saving range, and the pack promises you can heat yourself, not your home. The topper has no heating element. It works the way a thick duvet does, by trapping warm air between you and the mattress, which helps in a cold bedroom. The Sleep Charity puts the ideal bedroom temperature at around 16 to 18°C and says a room of about 12°C makes it difficult to drop off. In a warm room the same insulation works against you, since the charity links temperatures over 24°C to restlessness.

Who it suits

We rate the feel soft, 3 out of 10. Spiral fibre is springy at first but compresses where you lie and needs shaking out, so treat it as padding rather than support. It suits a spare room or a cold student flat in winter. Side sleepers who want pressure relief need memory foam, and hot sleepers a fibre topper with breathable sides; our cooling mattress toppers comparison lists those.

B&M sells it in store only, in double and king, and its returns policy accepts toppers only unused and in their original packaging.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“A cheap way to make a spare bed in a cold room feel thicker and warmer. It is padding rather than support, and anyone who already wakes up hot should choose a cooler fibre topper.”
