Simba Waffle Cotton Pillowcase Pair reviewed

The Simba Waffle Cotton Pillowcase Pair is two 50 x 75cm pillowcases in honeycomb-woven cotton, sold for £55 the pair. They add texture to a bed and feel softer and thicker than flat cotton.

The fabric

Waffle, or honeycomb, weave interlaces threads into a grid of raised squares. The pockets trap a little warm air, so waffle bedding feels thicker and cosier than flat-woven cotton while the cotton fibre still breathes. Simba uses 100% cotton at 200 thread count, coloured with organic dyes. The texture adds depth to a plain bed and hides creases, so ironing is optional. The fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the label for textiles tested for harmful substances, and it is made by the Costa family in Guimarães, Portugal.

The 50 x 75cm size fits a standard UK pillow, including Simba’s AeroDown; the 45 x 70cm Hybrid Pillow will sit a little loose. The cases close with buttons. Waffle weave leaves a faint grid pattern on the cheek after a night, which some people notice and others never do. Simba sells the same weave as a duvet cover and a bedding set, so the pillowcases can match the rest of the bed in Sage Green, Pure White, Cloud Grey or Soft Oat.

Washing and care

Simba advises a cold wash with similar colours and a low tumble dry with wool dryer balls. The deeper honeycomb weave holds more water than flat cotton, so allow a little longer for it to dry fully before putting it back on the bed. A second pair lets you change pillowcases midweek, when they need it more often than the rest of the bed.

Who it suits

Choose these to add texture to a plain bed or to match a waffle cover in a cooler bedroom. They cost £16 more per pair than percale. If your face runs hot at night, the smoother Tencel or percale pairs will feel cooler. Unused bedding can be returned within 30 days under Simba’s returns page.
