Simba Soft Muslin Pillowcase Pair reviewed

The Simba Soft Muslin Pillowcase Pair is two 50 x 75cm pillowcases in crinkled 160gsm cotton muslin, sold for £65 the pair. They are the softest pillowcases Simba makes and the priciest per pair.

The fabric

Muslin is a loosely woven cotton, one thread over and one under, which lets air and heat pass through easily. Simba uses 160gsm cotton and washes the finished fabric to set its crinkled texture, which softens further with every wash and needs no ironing. It is the most casual-looking fabric in the range. The bedding is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the label for textiles tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances, and it is dyed, cut and sewn by the Costa family in Guimarães, Portugal.

The standard UK size fits most pillows, including Simba’s 50 x 75cm AeroDown, while the 45 x 70cm Hybrid Pillow sits slightly loose. Coconut shell buttons close the cases. The washed, crinkled finish softens with each wash and needs no ironing. Muslin is also the gentlest choice if you dislike either the slippery feel of sateen or the papery crispness of percale against your face.

Washing and care

Simba’s care label says wash with similar colours on a regular cycle and tumble dry on low with wool dryer balls, with no bleach, iron or dry cleaning. Each wash adds to the crinkle and the softness, and the thin fabric dries faster than heavier cotton. A second pair lets you change pillowcases midweek, when they need it more often than the rest of the bed.

Who it suits

Buy these if you want a gentle, soft surface for your face and like the relaxed look of muslin, or to try the fabric before buying a cover. The open weave lets warmth escape, in line with the NHS sleep advice on keeping cool for sleep. At £26 more per pair than percale, they are a treat rather than a necessity.
