The Simba Brushed Tencel Pillowcase Pair is two 50 x 75cm pillowcases in brushed lyocell, sold for £45 the pair. They stay cooler and drier against the face than cotton, which makes them the pillowcases we would pick for anyone who flips the pillow to find the cool side.

The fabric

Tencel is a brand of lyocell, a fibre spun from wood pulp. It absorbs and releases moisture well, which is why it is popular with people who sleep hot. Simba weaves it in a simple one-over-one-under pattern at 200 thread count and then brushes the surface, giving a matte, almost velvety finish that is soft without being fluffy and resists creasing. The fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the label for textiles tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances, and it is cut and sewn by the Costa family in Guimarães, Portugal, using natural dyes.

The standard 50 x 75cm size fits most UK pillows and matches Simba’s AeroDown Pillow exactly; its 45 x 70cm Hybrid Pillow sits a little loose. The brushed surface is soft and smooth, and the fabric resists creasing, so the cases look neat without ironing.

Washing and care

Simba advises washing with similar colours and a low tumble dry with wool dryer balls. A cool, gentle cycle keeps the brushed surface soft for longer, and the fabric comes out of the dryer almost free of creases, so there is no need to iron it. A second pair lets you change pillowcases midweek, when they need it more often than the rest of the bed.

Who it suits

Choose these if your head and neck get hot at night, or as a cheap way to try Tencel before committing to a full set. The NHS sleep advice recommends a cool bedroom, and lyocell helps keep the pillow surface dry. They cost the same as the Egyptian cotton pair.
