Active Era Camping Air Bed with Bag Pump reviewed

The Active Era Camping Air Bed with Bag Pump is a 22 cm double air bed with 35 internal air coils that inflates from its own bag pump in about ten pumps, so it needs no electricity at all. It weighs 4.5 kg and costs £49.99, which makes it the lightest and most portable air bed in Active Era’s range.

The PVC is thinner than on Active Era’s raised Comfort models, 0.35 mm against 0.40 mm on the body and 0.55 mm against 0.60 mm on the flocked top, which is part of how the bed gets down to 4.5 kg. The flocking gives a softer, less slippery surface than bare vinyl, so a sheet or sleeping bag stays in place better.

Where it fits

The bag pump doubles as the storage and carry bag, which is the whole point of this bed. At a pitch without electric hook-up you avoid carrying a battery pump, and the two valves still let you use an electric pump at home. The 5°C lower limit on Active Era’s own comfort range is the thing to check before an early-spring or autumn trip, because an air bed has no insulation of its own and night temperatures in a tent can drop below that.

Measure your tent before you buy. At 191 x 137 cm inflated, this bed needs an inner tent with at least that much floor space.

Limits

At 22 cm it sits close to the ground, which is fine in a tent and awkward as a spare bed indoors, and it comes only as a double. There is no sleep trial. Online buyers have the 14-day cancellation right under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, and Active Era accepts returns of unused items only. Delivery is free.

For indoor guests, Active Era’s raised Comfort double stands 36.5 cm high and has a built-in pump. For camping without power, this is the more practical bed.
