The Futon Company Authentic Futon is the company’s traditional sofa bed futon: 11cm of cotton-rich, thermo-bonded recycled fibre with no foam inside. Futon Company, which has made futons in London since 1980, calls it the real deal and recommends it on the product page as a sofa and a guest or occasional bed.

An all-fibre futon is the classic firm, flat sleeping surface, and we place the Authentic at about 7 out of 10. Back and front sleepers usually like it; side sleepers feel the shoulders and hips more and may want a topper. Because there is no foam block, it folds easily on a trifold or bifold frame and stays flexible, which is what you want from a sofa that only occasionally becomes a bed.
The trade-off is durability under nightly use. Fibre compacts where it takes weight, which is why Futon Company tells owners to rotate the futon monthly and air it daily when it is used as a bed. If the futon will be your main bed, the foam-cored Comfy is the better buy for about £60 more in a double.
New futons sold in the UK must meet the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations, which require upholstery to pass a cigarette test and covers a match test; buying new from the maker is the simple way to be sure. The price covers the mattress only, without a frame, and the case is not removable, so a washable Futon Company cover is a sensible addition.
