The fabric

Tencel is a brand of lyocell, a fibre spun from wood pulp. It absorbs and releases moisture well, which is why it is popular with people who sleep hot. Simba weaves it in a simple one-over-one-under pattern at 200 thread count and then brushes the surface, giving a matte, almost velvety finish that is soft without being fluffy and resists creasing. The fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the label for textiles tested against more than 1,000 harmful substances, and it is cut and sewn by the Costa family in Guimarães, Portugal, using natural dyes.

The elasticated pockets fit mattresses up to 40cm deep; measure yours and any topper before ordering. The brushed surface feels soft and smooth against the skin, and the fabric resists creasing, so the sheet looks tidy without ironing. It comes in the same seven colours as the Tencel covers and pillowcases.

Washing and care

Simba advises washing with similar colours and a low tumble dry with wool dryer balls. A cool, gentle cycle keeps the brushed surface soft for longer, and the fabric comes out of the dryer almost free of creases, so there is no need to iron it. Fold the elasticated corners inside each other when you store it, and the sheet keeps a neater shape in the cupboard.

Who it suits

Buy this sheet if you get hot or sweaty in bed, especially on a memory foam mattress that holds warmth. The NHS sleep advice recommends keeping the bedroom cool, and a fabric that wicks moisture helps on the warm nights when that is hard. It costs a little more than percale.
