Simba Egyptian Cotton Fitted Sheet reviewed

The Simba Egyptian Cotton Fitted Sheet is a 300 thread count sateen sheet in certified Egyptian cotton, with corners deep enough for a 40cm mattress. It costs £55 for a single and gives the smoothest surface to lie on in Simba’s sheet range.

The fabric

This line is woven as sateen, where each thread floats over three and under one. That puts more yarn on the surface, so the fabric feels silky, drapes well and has a soft sheen. Simba uses 100% Egyptian cotton at 300 thread count, the highest in its bedding range, and says the cotton is certified by the Cotton Egypt Association, which licenses manufacturers to label products as genuine Egyptian cotton. The finished pieces also carry OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the safety label for textiles tested for harmful substances. Like all Simba bedding, it is cut and sewn by the Costa family in Guimarães, Portugal.

The elasticated pockets hold the sheet taut over a mattress up to 40cm deep, enough for most mattresses even with a slim topper, but measure yours first. Sateen’s long surface threads give a slippery, silky feel that some people love and others find too smooth. The sheet comes in the same seven colours as the duvet covers.

Washing and care

Simba recommends washing inside out on a cold cycle with similar colours, then a low tumble dry with wool dryer balls. Turning the fabric inside out protects the sateen sheen from rubbing against other laundry. Sateen creases less than percale, so a firm shake before making the bed is usually enough. Fold the elasticated corners inside each other when you store it, and the sheet keeps a neater shape in the cupboard.

Who it suits

Order it if you are finishing an Egyptian cotton sateen set, or if crisp percale has always felt stiff against your skin. It sleeps a little warmer than percale.
