Simba Cotton Percale Fitted Sheet reviewed

The Simba Cotton Percale Fitted Sheet is a 200 thread count cotton sheet with 40cm-deep corners, sold from £49 for a single. It is the least expensive fitted sheet Simba makes, and percale’s crisp weave makes it the natural choice if you sleep warm.

The fabric

Percale is a weave, not a fibre: each thread passes over one and under the next, which gives a tight, matte cloth that feels crisp and cool. Simba uses 100% cotton at 200 thread count, a modest figure that keeps the fabric light and breathable rather than heavy. The fabric is woven and sewn by the Costa family in Guimarães, Portugal, and coloured with natural dyes; Simba says the dyes are GOTS-approved, which is a statement about the dyes, not a GOTS certificate for the bedding. The finished sheets are certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, the label for textiles tested against a list of more than 1,000 harmful substances.

The pockets take a mattress up to 40cm deep, and the elasticated edge holds the sheet flat across the corners. Measure your mattress, plus any topper, before ordering. The sheet comes in the same seven colours as the percale duvet covers and pillowcases, so you can mix shades or match them exactly.

Washing and care

Simba advises a cold wash with similar colours and a low tumble dry with wool dryer balls, which shorten drying time and help soften the cotton. Percale comes out of the dryer creased; taking it out promptly and smoothing it straight onto the bed removes most wrinkles if you would rather not iron. Fold the elasticated corners inside each other when you store it, and the sheet keeps a neater shape in the cupboard.

Who it suits

Buy this sheet if you want a cool, natural layer directly under you and a fair price. Cotton breathes better than polyester blends, which matters on warm nights when the NHS sleep advice recommends keeping the bedroom cool.
