A grand Victorian bedstead in polished nickel over sand-cast brass, with a 178cm headboard and king to Large Emperor sizes.
No firmness rating from the manufacturer.
The Dickens Bed is one of the largest bedsteads And So To Bed makes. The headboard stands 178cm tall, the bedknobs measure a full 5 inches across, and every component is sand-cast brass finished in polished nickel. It is sold only in king size and above, starting at £14,155 for the king with a slatted base.
| Size | Mattress size | Overall width x length | Regular price |
|---|---|---|---|
| King | 150 x 200cm | 157 x 217cm | £14,155 |
| Super king | 180 x 200cm | 188 x 217cm | £14,460 |
| Emperor | 202 x 200cm | not published | £15,490 |
| Large Emperor | 217 x 215cm | not published | £16,350 |
All figures are from the Dickens Bed page on andsotobed.co.uk, read on 9 October 2026. The dimensions tab only lists the king and super king; ask a showroom for the Emperor footprints before you plan the room. The Large Emperor is sold with the ASTB platform base only. A seasonal sale was running at the time, so the checkout price may be lower than the regular prices above.
The brass is electroplated with nickel, which leaves a silvery, mirror-like surface and, according to the brand, a long-lasting protective layer. The posts are chunky turned columns, the top rail is a single heavy tube, and the foot end stands 120cm high. And So To Bed warns that small casting marks are part of the sand-casting process. The finish is lacquered, so the brand advises against any cleaning product at all, a soft dry cloth only.
The Dickens needs a big room with a high ceiling to look right. At 178cm, the headboard is taller than many adults, and the polished nickel reflects every lamp in the room, so it works best against a dark wall, as in the brand’s own photos. If you love the style but your room is modest, the Juniper Bed in the same collection gives a similar Victorian outline on a much smaller scale.
Plan for a long wait: metal bedsteads usually take 18 to 20 weeks. Delivery to mainland England is £45 and white glove assembly £95, plus £100 for Scotland and Wales. Returns must be notified within 14 days, special orders are only accepted back if faulty, and the site publishes no guarantee period, which is a notable gap on a bed at this price. The polished finish also shows fingerprints quickly.

“The Dickens is a statement piece in the literal sense, a nickel bedstead built to dominate a large room. Buy it for its scale and solid brass construction, but ask for the Emperor dimensions and a written guarantee before you commit this much money.”Go to shop →
