Firmness: Medium firmThe Zenbivy Flex Air is an 8cm ultralight backpacking air mattress with a stretch knit top and an R-value of 4.8.
The Zenbivy Flex Air is built for people who carry their bed on their back and want it to feel less like a lilo. Instead of the usual woven nylon, its top is a stretch knit that gives in every direction, and the lightest size costs £209.95 from Zenbivy’s UK shop.
Most air pads are wrapped in tightly woven nylon that does not give. Zenbivy argues that a rigid surface spreads your weight across the pad, so it feels stiff and bouncy, and that a stretch fabric forms to your shape instead and eases pressure points. On the Flex Air that top is a recycled polyester knit in 20 denier, a light fabric weight, over an offset air-cell structure that lets the pad flex with you rather than fold into a trough. The base is recycled polyester taffeta with a polyurethane membrane laminated to it, which Zenbivy says outlasts the coated fabrics many rivals use and gives stronger welds.
Zenbivy names its sizes in inches, width by length. All are 8cm deep and taper by about 13cm towards the foot; rectangular versions are listed but marked coming soon. Prices are Zenbivy UK’s at the time of writing (October 2026), taken from the Flex Air product page.
| Size (inches, Zenbivy’s name) | Dimensions (cm) | Weight | Packed (cm) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20x72 tapered | 183 x 51 x 8 | 567g | 16 x 8 | £209.95 |
| 25x72 tapered | 183 x 63 x 8 | 680g | 20 x 8 | £219.95 |
| 25x78 tapered | 198 x 63 x 8 | 709g | 20 x 9 | £219.95 |
At 51cm the narrowest size is slim even by backpacking standards. Restless sleepers and anyone with broad shoulders should pay the small extra for the 63cm version, which weighs only 113g more.
Instead of foam, two floating layers of Mylar foil inside the air cells reflect heat back towards you. Zenbivy rates it at R 4.8. That number is a measure of thermal resistance, how well the pad stops the ground drawing heat out of you, and the camping-mattress test standard ASTM F3340 measures it with the pad clamped between a warm and a cold plate. Higher is warmer. By the rule of thumb Ultralight Outdoor Gear publishes, 2 to 4.5 is a three-season mat and anything above 4.5 a winter one, so on paper the Flex Air is a borderline winter mat. Treat it as a strong three-season pad for the UK hills and, as the same guide suggests for extreme cold, add a closed-cell foam mat underneath in hard frost.
The Flex Air has no foam to help, so all the air comes from you. A waterproof inflation sack in the box doubles as a stuff sack, and you push air in with it instead of your breath. Inflate it fully. According to Zenbivy the pad is both more comfortable and warmer when firm, and the stretch top still gives some cushion at full pressure.
A repair kit comes in the box, which matters more on a thin air pad than on a foam mat, since one thorn can flatten it. Zenbivy’s warranty covers manufacturing defects for the lifetime of the product, for the original owner, but not accidents or wear. Zenbivy sells direct in the UK, delivers free on orders over £50 by Royal Mail Tracked 48 and accepts unused returns within 30 days.
The obvious alternative is the Flextail Tiny Sleeping Pad R05 AVS. By Flextail’s figures, its 55cm Mummy weighs 588g with its pump and is rated R 6, warmer than the Zenbivy for only 21g more, and its rechargeable pump capsule does the inflating for you. It also costs less, at £138. What the Flextail cannot match is the soft stretch top.
Buy the Flex Air if pack weight and a quiet, giving surface matter most to you, and you camp from spring to autumn. Choose the Flextail if you want more warmth for less money, and a self-inflating foam mattress such as the NEMO Roamer if you never walk further than the car.

“For backpackers who dislike the rustle and bounce of a typical ultralight pad, the Flex Air is the one to buy: at 567g in its lightest size it adds little to your load, and its lifetime defect warranty takes some of the sting out of the price. Car campers get more for their money from a thick self-inflating mattress.”Go to shop →
