The Flextail Tiny Sleeping Pad R09 AVS is a 9 cm self-inflating air pad for winter camping, with an R-value of 9.4 and a 33 g rechargeable pump capsule in the box. The Mummy size weighs 499 g with the pump. On Flextail’s UK store it is reduced to £154 at the time of writing (October 2026), down from a regular £184. Flextail’s sale banner gives no end date.

How warm is R 9.4?

R-values are measured to ASTM F3340, the standard test for the thermal resistance of camping mattresses. Going by Flextail’s own chart, three-season pads sit roughly between 2.5 and 4.5. A figure of 9.4 is deep-winter territory, the kind of number you want under you on snow or on a Scottish winter pitch. Flextail’s chart takes it down to -35°C, but that depends on your sleeping bag at least as much as on the pad. We give it 9.3 out of 10 for temperature, the highest of any Flextail pad we cover.

How it is built

The warmth comes from the inside. Instead of straight tubes, the R09 uses C-shaped chambers that interlock like small springs, and between them a five-layer film aluminised on both sides reflects heat back in stages. The chambers are taller than on the R03 and R05, which is where the extra 2 cm of depth comes from. The shell is 20D nylon. As on the other AVS pads, an Air Capsule fills and empties it through one valve, in about 60 seconds by Flextail’s figure, and a standard valve next to it takes a pump sack if the battery is flat. The figures here are from the R09 AVS product page.

Size Length x width Weight with pump Packed size UK price
Mummy 183 x 51 cm 499 g 28 x 10 cm £154
Mummy Large 196 x 65 cm 668 g 28 x 13 cm £154

Which size, and who it suits

The Mummy is the light one, but 51 cm tapering to the feet is narrow, and side sleepers who draw their knees up will find the edges. On 15 October 2026 it was also sold out in the UK. The Mummy Large is 196 cm long and a full 65 cm at the shoulders, so it suits broader and taller sleepers for 169 g more. On the Mummy Large, 9 cm of air is comfortable for back and side sleepers alike, and we score it 7.6 out of 10 for comfort. If you mostly camp between May and September, the R03 AVS or R05 AVS costs less and you will not miss the extra insulation.

Delivery, returns and warranty

Flextail’s delivery policy gives the UK 8 to 12 working days for electric goods, which covers a pad sold with a rechargeable pump, and import duties are included. The refund policy allows returns within 7 days for unused items in their packaging, at your cost unless faulty, and a one-year warranty covers defects.

Our verdict

Conclusion
“We recommend the R09 AVS if you camp on frozen ground and still want a pad under 700 g that fills itself in a minute. For summer campsites it is more warmth, and more money, than you need.”
